The great thing about flower bulbs is that you plant them once and then with very little care, you get many years of great blooms and flowers. Bulbs often multiply very easily and you can find new homes for them around your yard in many new places. Iris bulbs provide great curb appeal as well. Fall or spring is the best times to plant bulbs. Requirements are different for each bulb so be sure to read the guidelines before purchasing your flower bulbs. When planting bulbs in the fall, there is extra time for them to establish themselves so they can get a good start in the spring. Certain bulbs may not bloom the first year if planted in spring, but there are still a great deal of bulbs that can be planted in spring and bloom the first year with great results.
The fall-planted bulbs are put in two groupings: the early spring bloomers, such as hyacinth, crocus, tulip, narcissus, snowdrop; and the ones the bloom in summer, such as lilies. The treatments of the two groups are so equal that they may be discussed jointly.
Any bulb may be planted when they become mature; but in practice they are kept till late September or October before they are planted , as nothing is improved by planting sooner, and, moreover, the ground is usually not ready to receive them until old crops are taken out.
These bulbs are planted in the fall (one) because they last better in the ground than when stored; (two) because they will get a small start in the winter and fall and be ready for the first heat of spring; (three) and because it is usually impossible to get on the ground early enough in spring to plant them with much hope of success for that season.

If deer are common where you live, make sure to plant deer resistant plants. All too many times I have planted flowers that the deer eat only to be disappointed when it happens. The package on the bulbs should state if deer will eat them or not.
